The Seven Adjutant Mind-Spirits
Author Unknown
After learning from The URANTIA Book of the many spiritual influences which constantly surround us, guide us, guard us, and minister to us, I don’t think I shall ever again feel lonely – even if I am cast away on a desert island.
As The URANTIA Book states on page 1245, “The ministering personality of the guardian seraphim, the God presence of the indwelling Adjuster, the encircuited action of the Holy Spirit, and the Son-consciousness of the Spirit of Truth are all divinely correlated into a meaningful unity of spiritual ministry in and to a mortal personality. Though hailing from different sources and different levels, these celestial influences are all integrated in the enveloping and evolving presence of the Supreme Being.”
The words “the encircuited action of the Holy Spirit” in the foregoing quote refer to the seven adjutant mind-spirits, the creations of the Holy Spirit, who is also called the Mother Spirit, the Creative Spirit, and the Divine Minister, throughout the book.
The seven adjutant mind spirits are a primary influence in the evolution and development of living organisms. According to the book, “On the inhabited worlds the Spirit begins the work of evolutionary progression, starting with the lifeless material of the realm, first endowing vegetable life, then the animal organisms, then the first orders of human existence; and each succeeding impartation contributes to the further unfolding of the evolutionary potential of planetary life from the initial and primitive stages to the appearance of will creatures.” This labor of the Spirit is largely effected through her creations, the seven adjutant spirits.
The first five adjutant spirits have more to do with the animal component of human beings; the sixth and seventh influence the spiritual component. They always manifest themselves in the same order. On page 737 we can read, “The lower forms of plant life are wholly responsive to physical, chemical, and electrical environment. But as the scale of life ascends, one by one the mind ministries of the seven adjutant spirits become operative, and the mind becomes increasingly adjustive, creative, co-ordinate, and dominative.”
The description on page 709 of the progressive influence of the various adjutant mind-spirits on evolving life forms is enlightening. “At first only the spirit of intuition could function in the instinctive and reflex behavior of the primordial animal life. With the differentiation of higher types, the spirit of understanding was able to endow such creatures with the gift of spontaneous association of ideas. Later on we observed the spirit of courage in operation; evolving animals really developed a crude form of protective self-consciousness. Subsequent to the appearance of the mammalian groups, we beheld the spirit of knowledge manifesting itself in increase measure. And the evolution of the higher mammals brought the function of the spirit of counsel, with the resulting growth of the herd instinct and the beginnings of primitive social development.”
Then the first real human beings, the twins Andon and Fonta, made their appearance on Urantia. The Book relates on page 709, “…the twins were about ten years old when the spirit of worship made its first contact with the mind of the female twin and shortly thereafter with the male. We knew that something closely akin to human mind was approaching culmination and when, about a year later, they finally resolved, as a result of meditative thought and purposeful decision, to flee from home and journey north, then did the spirit of wisdom begin to function on Urantia and in these two now recognized human minds.”
The recognition of the order in which the various adjutant spirits manifest themselves could be of great assistance to educators, especially those teaching small children. Interestingly enough, more than one modern psychologist seems to have concluded that there is an essential order in which human needs must be met or developmental tasks completed in human mental development. Psychologist Abraham Maslow, for example, first lists the basic physiological needs that ensure physical survival, then psychological needs which include “belonginess and love needs,” “the desire to know and understand,” etc., and finally what he describes as “growth needs,” a yearning for truth, goodness, and beauty. Maslow felt that the higher nature of man, as exemplified in his need for truth, goodness, and beauty, would collapse without the lower nature as a foundation.
Although I have not found a specific quote in The URANTIA Book that corroborates Maslow’s statement, I believe it can be implied. Some development must take place in the preceding spiritual phase before the individual becomes receptive to the next spirit’s influence. In some persons there seems to be a great unevenness of development; the person may be courageous without being particularly intuitive; he may be knowledgeable without being courageous. Perhaps we should all open up ourselves more fully to the ministrations of the spirits functioning at the lower levels to facilitate our development of the spirit of worship and the spirit of wisdom.
The seven adjutant spirits are more circuit-like than entity-like. On page 402 we read that they “do not function as personalities apart from the universe presence of the Divine Minister; they are in fact a level of consciousness of the Divine Minister and are always subordinate to the action and presence of their creature mother.” How we finally become included in the spiritual circuits of the Divine Minister is told on page 738. “The adjutants function exclusively in the evolution of experimenting mind up to the level of the sixth phase, the spirit of worship. At this level there occurs that inevitable lapping of ministry – the phenomenon of the higher reaching down to co-ordinate with the lower in anticipation of subsequent attainment of advanced levels of development. And still additional spirit ministry accompanies the action of the seventh and last adjutant, the spirit of wisdom.” On page 379 we can read, “This ministry of the sixth and seventh adjutants indicates mind evolution crossing the threshold of spiritual ministry. And immediately are such minds of worship and wisdom function included in the spiritual circuits of the Divine Minister.
“When mind is thus endowed with the ministry of the Holy Spirit, it possesses the capacity for (consciously or unconsciously) choosing the spiritual presence of the Universal Father – the Thought Adjuster.
To close with a quote from page 370, “There are, then, three distinct levels of life production and evolution:
1. The physical-energy domain – mind-capacity production.
2. The mind ministries of the adjutant spirits – impinging upon spirit capacity.
3. The spirit endowment of mortal mind – culminating in the Thought Adjuster.
